Sea Buckthorn: A Traditional Remedy Under the Microscope
Sea buckthorn earned its place in our formula the way most things earn a place in medicine: first through centuries of use, then through the slower process of being studied properly.
A Plant With a Long Memory
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has been part of traditional natural medicine for centuries and is now the subject of scientific research. Its bioactive compounds—flavonoids, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and carotenoids—have been studied for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support skin barrier research.
What the Skin-Cell Research Shows
Particularly relevant to sun care: a study on human keratinocytes and fibroblasts found that sea buckthorn seed oil reduced UV-induced disturbances in redox balance and supported the cells' own antioxidant systems, including glutathione-related pathways and antioxidant vitamins.
Why It's in Our Formula
For us, sea buckthorn is not a "trend ingredient" chosen for its story. It is a researched active we include alongside mineral UV protection—the same standard of evidence we ask of every other ingredient in the formula.
This article summarises published ingredient research. It does not describe a clinical effect of any NATÜRLICH product, and is not medical advice.
